July 1968: Dr. Herschell Lee Hamilton received a clinical appointment in the Department of Surgery and became the first African American board-certified general surgeon at University Hospital. June 3, 1990: At the 20th annual commencement, UAB recognized the schools 50,000th graduate, Michelle Hight who received a bachelors degree in marketing. May 29, 1971: John T. Oliver, Jr., was elected to the University of Alabama Board of Trustees. August 2000: The Carnegie I Research University designation was replaced with Carnegies new classification as a Doctoral/Research-extensive University.. November 1, 2021: Dr. Lisa Schwiebert from the Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology, became the interim dean of the UAB Graduate School. UAB Hospital has added a senior vice president of inpatient services position to its operational structure and has named former UAB Hospital Interim CEO Anthony Patterson to the position.
