Brians Song emerged from an autobiography, I Am Third, by Piccolos teammate and star running back Gale Sayers, which was published soon after Piccolo died and contained a chapter on his relationship with Piccolo. In 1968, he had his best season in terms of yards with 450 on 123 carries (a 3.7 average), two touchdown catches, and 28 receptions (a 10.4 average). Since Piccolos death in 1970, the Bears have awarded an annual Brian Piccolo Award to a rookie and veteran (starting in 1992) who best exemplifies the courage, loyalty, teamwork, dedication, and sense of humor of the late running back. Piccolo, 26, died on June 16, 1970, and she was diagnosed with cancer in 1972.
